The French fashion designer Christian Dior was born in Granville, Normandy, on January 21, 1905. His father was a wealthy cotton merchant, and his mother was a pious Catholic. Dior grew up in a sheltered environment and was educated at the prestigious Lycée Chambre-de-Commerce de Granville. After finishing high school, he moved to Paris to study art. However, he quickly lost interest in painting and began working for the fashion designer Robert Piguet.

In 1946, Dior launched his own fashion house with financial backing from businessman Marcel Boussac.
